Brand guideline
Brand guidelines are the documented standards for how a brand’s visual identity, voice and messaging are applied. They prevent each project from starting from guesswork and every new designer from inventing different rules.
Guidelines are not creative constraints; they are decision memory. A first designer made a choice about the color palette or the tone when the brand was born. Guidelines document that choice so the second, tenth and fortieth designer do not have to remake the decision.
The best guidelines are incomplete. They document the principles, not the prescriptions, which means a new designer can solve a problem the brand has never seen and still keep the brand recognizable. The worst read like a legal document with thirteen exceptions to every rule.
