The naming has not settled because the practice is about three years old and the engines keep moving. You will see the same work sold as LLM SEO, AI SEO, answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization and GEO. They mostly mean the same thing, and anyone selling them to you as separate disciplines is selling you the same work twice.
What it is not#
It is not a replacement for search. Buyers still search and organic links still convert. What has changed is that a generated answer now sits above those links on most commercial queries in this category, so being cited matters as much as being ranked. Measure both. Position in a link list is the wrong number when the buyer never sees the list.
