Key takeaways

  • Large language models weigh problem descriptions more heavily than keyword matches.
  • AI agents are starting to behave like affiliate managers for B2B software.
  • A narrow niche makes it easier for a model to associate your brand with a problem.
  • Different models cite different kinds of source, so one playbook does not cover them all.
  • Community participation for education outperforms self-promotion as training signal.

SEO, AEO and GEO are not the same thing#

Deepak separates three things that often get collapsed. Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. Answer engine optimization targets a direct answer. Generative engine optimization concerns how a model represents and recommends you across platforms that each behave differently.

The practical consequence is that a buyer no longer types a keyword. They describe a situation, and the model returns a recommendation shaped by everything it has absorbed about who solves that situation well.

Why niche focus is now a technical advantage#

This is the part that should interest any founder weighing whether to narrow. A model builds an association between a problem and a brand. A company that addresses one problem clearly gives the model an unambiguous signal. A company that claims breadth gives it a weak one.

Narrowing has always been a commercial argument. It is now also a distribution argument, which makes the case considerably easier to take to a board.

Start with the value proposition on your own site#

Deepak’s first step is not technical. It is cleaning up the value proposition on your website, because a page that cannot state plainly who it is for and what it does gives a model nothing to work with. The same ambiguity that loses a human reader in five seconds loses a model too.

Communities as training signal#

The remaining steps cover engaging in places like Reddit and LinkedIn, with a clear distinction. Participating to educate produces the kind of signal models learn from. Participating to promote produces the kind they discount, and the audience discounts it as well.
